Monitoring and Analysis the Effectiveness of Green Areas in Removing Air Pollutants in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Taichung

Absrtact
The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of green area in removing air pollutants at different period. The field surveys were conducted once every two months in three green areas which were subsidized by EPA in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Taichung. The study surveyed the air quality variation and plant growth. The items of air quality monitoring were SO2, NO2, O3, CO, PM10; and plant survey were number, tree-crown height, tree-crown width, ratio of green cover, leaf area index, and growth of different plant species. Then, we based the data to estimate the green cover area, green volume and total leaf area of each green area. The results show that green areas have the effectiveness in removing air pollutants. As time goes by, the green cover area, green volume and total leaf area of each green area increased; and the removing effectiveness tend to vary with them. Due to plant growth and air quality are apparent influenced by climate, we suggest that government should set up long-term monitoring stations to monitor the relation between green area construction and air quality variation.
